Scripture
Ecclesiastes 4:16 – “Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.”
Devotional Thought
Human success is fragile. Solomon describes rulers rising and falling, crowds
celebrating one leader only to quickly move on to another. Fame fades.
Accomplishments fade. Recognition fades. Ecclesiastes forces us to confront
how temporary life under the sun really is.
We often build our identity on things that cannot ultimately sustain us—career success,
influence, approval, financial security, or the applause of others. But pressure has a way
of exposing how unstable those foundations really are. If our identity is rooted in achievement,
then failure will crush us. If our worth depends on recognition, then criticism will unravel us.
Only Christ is stable enough to carry the full weight of our identity.
The gospel frees us from living for temporary glory because Jesus offers us an eternal kingdom
that cannot be shaken. True meaning is not found in how many people notice us, but in belonging
to the One who never changes.
Questions for Reflection
- What temporary thing are you most tempted to build your identity upon?
- How does the promise of Christ’s eternal kingdom reshape your perspective today?
Prayer
Jesus, forgive me for placing my identity in things that cannot last.
Help me remember that success, approval, and recognition will always fade.
Teach me to build my life on You alone. Thank You for giving me a kingdom
and a relationship that will never pass away. Amen.
